STORIES AND NEWS
NOTICE: Equine ambulance attendant needed for the HEART ambulance in PA at the Devon Horse Show for 4 and 5 June. Contact Michelle Melaragno director of operations. Must be TLAER trained email@example.com
Eric Thompson sent word that he’s in Joplin, MO doing small animal search and rescue with Code 3.
From Rebecca Gimenez: “Whew! Completed a set of SIX consecutive training events for TLAER across NC and VA in the last 5 weeks... finally we are home! Thanks so much to Tori and Justin, Shea and all their staff for putting on some great training courses and venues - and keeping the rain away from all but the very last one.”
Donna Newmeyer: “Prince George County already had a loose multiple-horse round up just yesterday so the team that got trained 2 years ago got practice. Thanks again to you all for the co-operation between the fire folks and the animal folks as we all learned from each other. Good fun and good food was had by all.”
Chris Jonason of Wave Trek Rescue wrote: “I leave to go and teach in Central America June1st for 3 weeks.”
From Eric Thompson: “I just rolled out our new Mounted Search and Rescue Team yesterday. Below is the link to the news article and pictures. I'm on the dark bay in the first pic in the article facing the camera.” http://www.kansascity.com/2011/05/11/2868896/overland-park-readies-volunteer.html
From Ed Childers of North Strabane Fire in PA: “Paul and I presented to the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Association’s Central Region quarterly training at State Collage PA at the end of April and we felt it went really well. The theme was the primary incident that involves animals can very easily turn into a secondary incident that involves humans, so LAR is a good thing!
“Mid May we supported the PA Equine Council with a safety seminar. May 21, we went to Warren County PA to support the local 4H chapter with a full Save Your Horse safety seminar. We have our formal Operational level training for the County’s First Responders this October and working on a couple of additional (new) efforts as well.”

From Deke Carls: “Andalusia Horse Rescue: On the evening of May 12, 2011 Dr. Carls, equine technician Leslie and small animal technician Amy were called to assist with a horse that had fallen approximately 20ft into a ravine. Having recently completed Large Animal Tactical Rescue training in Richmond, KY, they were excited to help.
With the aid of both the Andalusia Fire Department and the Rock Island Co. Sheriff’s Department, they were able to use their newly learned techniques and select equipment to pull the horse to safety. The animal was carefully examined and released into the care of her grateful owners.
We are extremely grateful for the assistance of the other involved agencies. Without their help we might not have been able to save the 30 year old, Clydesdale-Cross, “Yeti”. We are excited about this success and look forward to helping other large animals in the area should the need arise!”

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS: Factory farms produce 100 times more waste than sewage plants, and hog manure has 10 to 100 times the number of pathogens (disease-causing organisms) than human waste, and yet is not treated to kill them. Animal waste doesn’t only contain pathogens, it also can have heavy metals, antiobiotics, ammonia, nitrates and other chemicals. (What ARE they feeding these animals!) Read more: http://www.care2.com/greenliving/factory-farms-create-100x-more-waste-than-sewage-plants.html#ixzz1Na4ZL58U
From Rebecca Gimenez: “The cost of large animal rescue is a legitimate concern in the USA as well - especially in the poor economic conditions we have currently. The cost is easier to estimate in modern times due to accounting improvements - but that accounting DOES NOT address the price of a life. As the spokesperson Taylor said - the wanna-be rescuers that get themselves trapped, hurt and injured trying to attempt an extrication on their own of an animal that doesn't understand english, wears steel shoes on it's feet, and operates on fight/flight alone are also way too common. Worse - once a wanna-be gets themselves out on the ice or into the mud, then the professionals have to show up anyway and have only a more complicated scene to deal with.
We are trying to get people in the US to do better (following the lead of the UK!) and call the emergency services to allow them to more professionally, efficiently and safely perform these types of rescues. Ongoing training to professionals in the fire service, rescue, and veterinarians is improving their response in these types of incidents - assisting owners, limiting loss of life and injury to people as well as animals. These are considered HUMAN incidents, not just ANIMAL ones.
Thank you for publishing these figures, and the well researched article.”

Code 3 Associates was deployed to Caruthersville, MO on May 1st in support of the ASPCA, who was brought in my Emergency Management to assist in the evacuation of animals out of the flood threat area. Over 4 days, evacuation teams transported 539 animals over to Kennett, MO fairgrounds. Included in those 539 animals were horses, chickens, a goat, and of course dogs and cats.
One of the County properties we evacuated had a palamino horse on it that was down, and had extreme swelling in her rear right leg. She was thin and dehydrated. We were able to get her up and loaded on the trailer. A farrier was brought in and found a 4 inch nail embedded in her foot. Once he got the nail out and the infection drained, the horse started a quick recovery. Talking with the owner, he noticed the horse laying down approximately two weeks prior to our arrival. It's estimated the nail embedded around that time. I don't know if local authorities will be charging the owner or not.
Good news for mustangs. A Nevada bill that would have stripped Bureau of Land Management wild horses and burros of their wildlife status, possibly threatening the animals' access to water resources in that state, has died in committee

Ashlyn Kersten of Granby, CT has earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts. Her project includes making a brochure and DVD that Conn. State Animal Response Team (CTSART), a not -for-profit volunteer organization, can use as handout materials for community Emergency Responders and related volunteers who need to learn how to handle and rescue horses in emergency situations. These items will become part of their training program, which is a community service effort. Limited copies are available through Dr. Peter Conserva, the head of large animal rescue for SART in north central Connecticut.
